Kumquats are in season!
Kumquats are the cherry tomato version of the orange except that you can eat the skin! According to my mother, the best time to get it is from mid-autumn to winter time. Or if you can’t keep track of your seasons, you can tell if your local supermarkets carry them. A sure sign of this is when you go to a local Chinese market. They come in a box for your convenience and it’s very inexpensive to get.

Because the kumquats are raw, it has a very sour taste, so please take caution when you eat it. If you like the sour taste like me, then you would not mind at all. Also don’t forget that there is a seed or two!

In the Cantonese culture, the kumquat can be preserved in a jar with salt or sugar for up to 10 years. Just the other day I bought my coworker a box of kumquats and that’s exactly what she is doing. The end result is that you’ll get dried up kumquats which you can use for tea. It’s good for soothing a sore throat and it’s also good for your health, so I heard. I definitely don’t think I can wait that long to have kumquat tea. I think I’m just going to treat it like a lemon and squeeze a fresh teaspoon worth of kumquat juices in my tea and drink to that. I’m sure it’ll taste just as good!
