Pho Hoai Vietnamese Restaurant on Avenue U, Brooklyn

After having an exhausting day, I suggested to my mother to eat out for dinner and preferably Vietnamese food. So Finechinaguy and I met up with my mother at this restaurant at 7:45pm. We’ve been coming here on and off for years since there aren’t many Vietnamese restaurants unless you walk a little further down to where 13th street is. When there’s a craving for Viet, we come here to indulge ourselves.
I apologize for not taking a picture of the front of the restaurant. That night we were all just so very tired and wanted to sit down to have dinner. But, Finechinaguy did have the energy to take pictures of the inside of the restaurant and the food which we can share with you.

Inside of the restaurant

Summer Roll w/shrimp, vermicelli, and scallion
The summer roll can come off as dry because of the rice paper and the dry vermicelli. But the shrimp is its saving grace and that’s when the moisture comes in. If you find yourself with a not so moist shrimp, dip it in its accompany peanut sauce and let it’s sweet delight overwhelm your taste buds.

Summer Roll w/peanut sauce
I love the peanut sauce regardless of how moist or not the shrimp is. The sweetness is my personal favorite and I think it gives great texture to the roll. Take a chop stick and dip it into the sauce and taste it to see if you like it. You absolutely have nothing to lose!

Fish ball w/beef, vermicelli noodles, scallions, and onions
My mother wanted soup noodles that is light so she chose this. She loved how flavorful the soup is and how that gave the fish ball taste. She finished the whole bowl so I’m assuming that this must be delicious or that she’s hungry.

Pho Noodles - Raw beef briskets w/scallion and onions
Finechinaguy chose this dish. When you come to a Vietnamese restaurant you have to try their pho noodles because that’s what they’re famous for. Because the soup is so hot, you can take your raw beef briskets and immerse it so that it cooks quickly. When beef is overcooked, it never tastes good because it has a tough texture and it loses it’s flavor. The soup here is good, but it wasn’t anything different from the Viet restaurants in Chinatown. This soup and the contents in the bowl definitely satisfies the craving for pho noodles for sure. And that is why we keep coming back here for more!

Grilled Pork chop w/rice, cucumbers, tomatoes and scallions
Almost not having rice for a good few days, I craved for rice! I decided to get the grilled pork with rice because I’ve always had a positive experience with this even as a kid! To my luck, it tastes just as good and more! The pork is seasoned and grilled so well that its flavor is drawn onto the rice! This makes the rice taste like it’s been stir fried because of the oil and the scallion! It’s very delicious and luckily for me the pork wasn’t burnt! Delicious!!

Grilled pork seasoned with peanuts and scallion w/rice vermicelli
This can be eaten as an appetizer or an entree. I chose to eat this as an appetizer because you can take a little bit of the rice vermicelli and pork and place it in the accompany romaine lettuce, wrap it up and eat it! The grilled pork tastes like my entree above, and the dry vermicelli along with the lettuce gives it a nice texture. You can dip it with the provided sweet carrot vinegar, but I didn’t need any. It’s a very delicious dish and I believe everyone should try it!

Sweet Mixed Nut Drink, aka, Ching Bo Lern, w/sliced seaweed and longan
This is my favorite drink in this restaurant! I remember when I was a kid, my mom would always make this sweet drink in the summer to cool me down. This is made with brown sugar (the chinese ones that comes in the long brown bars), seaweed, longan, and this mixed nut that I don’t know what you call it in english. What overpowers this drink is the seaweed. But once you get past the first couple of sips, you’ll taste how sweet it is! I need to have at least two cups to “cool” myself down because I was burning up.
The whole meal cost $41.00 which isn’t bad at all. A very full and satisfying meal.
Anyways, this Vietnamese restaurant always deliver their traditional tasting food which I love. It isn’t really different than the other Vietnamese restaurants, I think, but their food is very comforting. I will always come back here when I’m craving for Viet!
Now I leave you with the NYS Health Inspection report card!

The food here is sooo tasty! This is the first place my hubby and I went to when we moved near by and we have gone religously since. Our favorite meal is the 18a the vegitarian soup and we get the summer rolls or the 4 vietmenese spring rolls….I highly recommend it to anyone! Oh and thier chicken with scallion and ginger is awesome!
