So I’m still on my road trip in Canada, Trois Rivieres to be exact. The trip has been a blast so far and barely had time to actually post about it. I’m going to skip going through sequential order and just post about some of the great places I’ve eaten at in Montreal while I’m still on my road trip.

Au Pied de Cochon Montreal
Au Pied de Cochon, the trendy restaurant that we actually managed to get seats at on a sunday night. This was mentioned to me by several people and from Anthony Bourdain’s show, No Reservations. After arriving at Montreal sunday night, we managed to get reservations at 10 pm and still had to wait about 20 minutes for a table. By then, it was beginning to clear out. When we first arrived, the line was out the door, packed to capacity. Definitely make reservations otherwise be prepared to wait. If you do go without reservations, go late, after 10pm, and you might manage to get a table (Picture was taken near closing time).
Vegans and Vegetarians, be warned, this is not the restaurant for you. This place is home to pork and duck fat. The restaurant name itself means literally “At the Foot of the Pig.”
More after the Jump!

Waiting for our table and drooling at the people’s food. That’s an award (partially visible) .

There is a bar so if you’re not in a group, that might be a better option. They have a large selection of wine of course and a good amount of beer on tap (You’ll want to order some for the long wait for your dishes.) The hostess and waiters speak French and English and are extremely friendly. The decor is mainly varnished wood and its a beautiful but simple modern set up.

After being seated, you’ll be served bread and definitely order some wine or beer. The waiters are very knowledgable and you can ask them about the menu. The portions are very large, I would even recommend splitting some dishes. The prices are on the expensive side but you get large portions for the price.
After you order the food, be prepared for a long wait. My group and I ordered a few dishes and waited over 30 minutes for it. I had to try the Duck in a Can, how can I not resist seeing what it is exactly. So when it finally arrived, I had to snap some pictures.

The waitress opened the can for me and poured it out onto the plate with bread. All I could do was gawk at what had happened right in front of me.

Au Pied de Cochon Montreal Duck in a Can $36.00
The duck in the can just poured out with juices, carrots and Foie Gras (Goose or Duck Liver). This is a very fatty and large portion of a duck that was stuffed into a can and sealed after cooking.

A very fatty and filling dish. It is recommended you share it. Of course the duck is tender so you’ll be sure to enjoy that. The thick fatty layer on the other hand will turn away some and still make others cry for even attempting to eat such fattiness. I, on the other hand jumped at the chance to eat that. Its moist, juicy and explodes with flavor, what fat doesn’t? I am biased for fatty parts of the animal. This dish definitely filled me up and I just had to give up on eating anymore.
I came down immediately with the “itis” as some would say or in other words, “food coma”. All I wanted to do was close my eyes and sleep while my stomach took care of the rest. Along with Foie Gras over Poutine that my mates had (next post), I didn’t even have room to try the Sugar Pie or the Pied de Cochon (Pig’s Foot) itself, the signature dish.

HURRY IT ON UP!
Good stuff!! You really went for it!
I, too, enjoy the fatty parts so I was happy to read this review.
Was this served warm or cold? It definitely looks better than chicken-in-a-can, but for $36, it should!
It was hot, they sealed it in right after cooking but served it right away so even the can was hot.
you went to a reastaurant and then paid 36 sheets for canned food.
i bet the chefs wish there were more like you.
:S

The line was out the door and with reservations for 10pm, we still had to wait over half hour for a table. Also google what others think of the duck in a can. I haven’t really found anyone who didn’t like it. If you’re looking for bad canned food, take a look at the other post, Whole Chicken in a Can.
Awesome–bendy is a nerd!
At what time and on what day were those pictures taken?
Just asking because every time I went there, there was not one table empty. Always packed. But on your pics, I can see some tables empty and no line up. Tell me when and at what time was that and I will know when to head there for avoiding the fully packed ambiance. I love when it is jammes of people, but now with all that swine flu thang
Sorry for the late reply! The time my group had seats was well around 10:30pm, we still had to wait and by the time we were seated, it was after 11pm. It was very late and most of the diners were finishing up. It was the only way we could get a table for that night since we only made reservations that day.
Great recap. you certainly documented it better than I. I’m still recovering…
