Update: Read Part 2 here!

Pepsi (PepsiCo) has launched new sodas recently. Pepsi Natural, Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback drinks uses All Natural ingredients only. Didn’t even know that was the case until I received a bottle of it.

Pepsi Natural is made with sugar, natural caramel and kola nut extract, is sold in newly designed glass bottles in the premium or natural food aisles of stores in 10 markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle. The Throwback versions use real sugar and feature retro packaging.

I have looked left and right for Pepsi or Coca Cola that used Sugar instead of High Fructose Corn Syrup for the past year. It was very difficult to find. I checked some Costcos and didn’t find any that sold Cans from Mexico where they do use Cane Sugar. When I went to Europe, it was mixed, some regions used Sugar and others used Corn Syrup.

I just came back from Canada but while I was there, I stopped by a supermarket for drinks and I just had to check what the soda’s there used. It was real sugar! I stocked up and brought about six 12 Can Packs and drove that all the way back to New York (a few cans didn’t survive the trip!). Wonder why I even searched for real sugar? Its because there’s a syrupy after taste and film left in your throat after drinking regular colas, the ones that use real sugar doesn’t. The taste is also slightly different.

In America it is difficult to find real sugar in the big label soft drinks and snacks. That’s because America is based on staple crop production. America produces much of the world’s Corn because the government subsidizes the staple crops such as Corn, Wheat, Soy and Rice with 90% of the subsidies going to them (check agricultural farm bills). Other crops such as Oranges for example, are only given a fraction of a percent. That is why Soda is so much cheaper than Orange Juice and junk foods that use corn are cheaper than healthier foods. The subsidies causes imbalances on the price of the crops, cheaper prices on the ones that are largely subsidized. Companies switch to Corn Syrup instead of Cane Sugar simply because it is cheaper.

I also hear that the Kosher versions (cans will have a little “K” symbol) that hits kosher stores and markets before Passover, only available for a few weeks. I will find out when its near passover again.

Know of a soda that uses real sugar? Let me know cause I’m all for trying it out (Soda Addict, I admit it)!

I was going to ask the same thing finechinagirl asked! what’s the whole point of finding this rare product if it’s not like 100 times tastier than the corn syrup?

Natural Brew, handcrafted Ginseng cola. Uses evaporated cane sugar. They also make Outrageous Brew, ginger ale.
