After a night of booze, we had a late start in Ottawa the next day. So what better way to wake up a hang over than with food! Brunch it was! We went back to Byward Market looking for this out of the way gem. It was very nondiscript and we almost missed it. The Murray Street Restaurant (on Murray Street!), is right next to the Byward Market with a large Pig with a M on the glass door.

Apparently this place was started by Paddy Whelan and Chef Steve Mitton, formerly of Social Restaurant & Lounge. Social is a very swanky Restaurant & Lounge right by Byward Market. When I say swanky, its swanky, dress up! Anyway, here’s a sneak peak.

The restaurant is small but its has a quaint feeling to it. Their kitchen’s motto is “relax, it’s Sunday.” Thats exactly what we did, relaxed and took our time enjoying the food.

Their menu and cruisine is inspired by the slow food movement, back to basics, authentic Canadian cuisine with fresh regional and seasonal ingredients. The Sunday Brunch menu dubbed “That $12 Sunday Thing” was a great way to describe it. We didn’t know what to expect when we ordered but we hoped it was as good as the items on the menu looked. We met a very friendly waitress there whom we chit chatted with about touristy attractions. We met some very friendly servers on the trip amazingly.

Now I have to warn you, the dishes were amazing. It might have been the alcohol from the night before talking or it might have been exactly what the restaurant claims or maybe both.  I can only assume the names belong to the local suppliers of ingredients. All the ingredients were very fresh and tasted delicious.

French Toast made of Egg Battered Ace Cranberry Foccacia (Flat Baked Italian Bread), Scoop of Pure Gelato Vanilla Ice Cream & Warm Maple Caramel.

Didn’t that all sound and look divine? It was exactly what a Sunday Brunch called for. In each dish, you can taste the individual ingredients even when it was mixed all together. We split the dishes and everyone had a bit of each before we wolfed down everything. When food is this good, it can only be described as delicious. You would just have to try it yourself to truly appreciate it. If you’re ever in Ottawa, look for this absolutely amazing gem!

This looks absolutely amazing! I wish there was a restaurant like this here. Quite frankly I’m not impressed w/American Breakfast any more, lol, especially after looking at this!

honestly, there is no better restaurant in ottawa in my opinion, not just for food (but especially for food) but on all levels. i adore this place.

brunch is fabulous, the pastries you get while you wait on your meal are the best i’ve ever had. everything i have tried so far has been great. the bangers and mash were a highlight.

    next time the pain doree….yum.
