*7/19/09 Update:  I returned here for the second time and I love the haleem and naan! It’s so savory and enjoyable to eat especially when the naan is fresh out of the oven!  I highly recommend you guys to try!

Lesson of the day! As my friend points out, when a restaurant or store lists a few countries for the cuisine type, the country that is listed first is usually the primary group.  So in this case, even though the restaurant lists 3 countries, it is owned by a Pakistani and the cuisine type is Pakistani.   The reason why the other countries are listed is to attract customers of those nationalities.   Yes, what an interesting tidbit!

The world of Jackson Heights is bristling with fast-paced people primarily from South Asia of all hours of the night.   See in Chinatown, it’s gets dead around 11pm, but here supermarkets are shops are opened 24hrs!  Restaurants are opened late night, but not all of them are.   I have to admit, yes there are people walking around late night, but they are mostly men.   I have yet to see any women besides my friend and I, so it made us feel a little uncomfortable.  Now, there are halal carts on almost every block so you can be sure that you’ll never go hungry.  After shopping for Indian spices and ingredients at the infamous Patel Brothers supermarket,  my friend and I decided to look for a restaurant to settle down to eat.   So we drove to Woodside, which isn’t too far away, to a restaurant that I have yet to explore.

Excited to what I have in store for my taste buds, my friend orders a bunch of dishes that you can see below!

The Meal

The Meal

Chicken Biryani

Chicken Biryani

This chicken biryani tastes sort of bland.  I say needs some salt and pepper!  My friend agrees and says that her mother can make it better.  I can only imagine how it would taste if it was good, but hot chicken curry and haleem will have to help with the eating experience!

Haleem

Haleem

So I ask my friend, “What is this?  Some kind of curry?”  My friend reply and said that it’s Haleem, which I have no idea what it is.  Haleem sounds like some person’s name, and I thought maybe this sauce is named after a person?  After saying something this ignorant, my friend tells me that it’s actually grounded beef with lentils, wheat, and other spices which is cooked slowly for a long time.  I had to look it up on Wikipedia just to confirm, and apparently it’s cooked for about 7-8 hours!  The texture of this is almost gooey and thick because of the lentils, I believe.  I am a big fan of lentils so I loved this dish.   I can barely taste the beef, and if I wasn’t told that there was beef in it, I would think that it’s a vegetarian dish!

Naan

Naan

Haleem is best eaten with Naan!  Let me tell you how incredibly filling it is!   This naan came straight out of the oven and I love it! I never had naan so huge before and I felt like having a virgin personal pizza!  Warm, crispy, and delicious!

Pink Gulab Jamun

My friend did tell me the names of the dessert, but I could not remember.  I just love how colorful they are and I wished I could have eaten everything there!  But because of my gulab jamun experience, I didn’t want to eat it because I want it fresh! Last thing I want is to take a bite into something so oily and wet!

Overall I had a great eating experience!  My friend says she has definitely had better, but because of the limited choices in restaurants, this will have to do.  I guess because I’m not exposed to Indian food like this, I can’t really tell what’s good.  I did like eating everything that I had and would not mind coming back!

Ok, I will leave you with the city’s health inspection resport!
