Homemade Chicken Biryani – Pakistani Style

BIRYANI!! Yeah!

What is biryani?  Well, it is basically [basmati] rice that is slow-cooked with many spices, such as cumin, coriander, cardamom,  cinnamon,  bay leaves, cloves, mint, garlic, saffron, with meat.   Biryani is prominent in Pakistan, India, and other Muslim countries like Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangaladesh and so on and so forth.   According to Wikipedia, each country makes biryani different by adding their unique flavors to make it their own.

Now my dear Pakistani friend brought me chicken biryani that his mother made which got me all excited because it’s homemade!  It’s one thing to go out to the restaurant to get it, but I personally think it’s always better when it is made at home!  He told me that his mother and sister spends at least four hours prepping and cooking it.  I guess anything that is cooked for that long has to be good because all the ingredients are fully immersed into the main component of the dish, which is the rice!

Just a little background on Pakistani Biryani that I read on Wikipedia:

Sindhi/Lahori Biryani

The Sindhi variant of biryani is very popular in Pakistani cuisine and biryani of all types are eaten in all parts of Pakistan and the world.

In Pakistan biryani enjoys substantial popularity, particularly in the cities of Karachi and Lahore, where the chicken version is popular. [2] The Pakistani chicken biryani is very similar to Lahore biryani, but combines elements of Sindhi biryani and includes potatoes. The national flag carrier, PIA, also serves this cusine for most of its western bound flights to give foreigners a feel of Pakistani cuisines.

So basically what makes this biryani a Pakistani dish is the potato? Haha.   Apparently, there are elements of Sindhi biryani, which I honestly don’t even know what it is, which means there’s more to it than just the potato of course.  I would ask my friend, but he doesn’t pay too much attention to the food since he just eats it!  After researching it on google, what comes down to it is Sindhi biryani is more spicy and flavorful, which I love.

I have to say this is one delicious and flavorful biryani!  It’s like there’s a party in my mouth and everyone is invited, Yes that’s a quote from The Simpsons.  I had biryani once at a restaurant, but that dish pales in comparison to this! My words definitely cannot do justice to this dish, but it’s very delicious.  The chicken breast is breaded which I love, but the drumstick isn’t which is ok because I like to taste different textures of my dish.  The rice is definitely spicy, but not too spicy that will make me cry, and you can taste the fusion of many flavors that I mentioned above.  Oh yes, the bonus for me is that there are potatoes in it!  For those of you who don’t know me, I am a potato fanatic! I love potatoes cooked in every and any way, almost, and just having that part of the rice made it that much more fulfilling to eat.   Mm, the chicken is moist and succulent, which complimented with the richly enhanced flavorful rice.   If I ever decide to attempt making this dish, you guys will be the first to know, but I am sure it will never come as close to this as I’m sure years of experience has made this so amazing.

Anyways, when having a dish like this, I would strongly advise you to get a drink.  I wanted to drink Ginger Ale to help digest my food because biryani is very heavy, but I opted to drink almond milk tea instead because it was available and it’s my comfort drink! But I would advise having ice tea because I think that personally goes well with anything heavy!

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this post! More posts are definitely coming up.  Until then, have a happy July 4th weekend and look forward to my holiday posts!
