July 4th Flag Cake – Ina Garten’s Recipe
Every July 4th, I usually follow the tradition of going to a friend’s or relative’s bbq for the weekend. Quite honestly, I have never been a fan of bbq, but I enjoy socializing and mingling with others. With these bbqs, the only part that I play is either clean up or maintanence which I’m not a fan of. So this year, I swear to myself that I will make dessert. And the only time I will clean up is after myself when I’m making the dessert. Now I’m not being lazy or selfish, but there are many others who could help and I refuse to do it since I’m going to contribute a huge cake!
Now understand that I’m not much of a baker. I think only recently that I’ve taken this interest. There are a lot of things that I’ve only done for my first time, like this cake that I will show you, for instance. My source of inspiration for a cake for the fourth of July is the Food Network website. FN is the only channel, next to Fit TV, which I really watch. And the website had a special section for July 4th recipes and one of them was Ina Garten’s Flag Cake recipe!
Ina Garten's Flag Cake Recipe
This is my first attempt and let me remind me you that I am definitely not a cake decorator or an artist! It definitely shows.
The recipe is really simple. You bake the yellow cake and then you decorate the heck out of it. I did have a problem finding a pan this large since the dimensions are 18 x 13 x 1/2.” I did find it at my local grocery store to my luck and can only imagine how many people I can feed with this cake.

The only thing I did different with this recipe as you can see is that I did not use cream cheese for the topping. Instead I used sour cream because I always thought that cream cheese, aka frosting since it’s the main component for it, is too sweet. Even though the frosting with give it a thicker and nicer texture, I personally did not want that and used sour cream instead to give it that cheesecake-esq flavor! Even though the cake looks like crap, it tastes so amazing! Ina Garten is some kind of chef. I love this recipe because the cake itself is so super moist and it’s not too sweet. Confectioner sugar is used to replace sugar which is why the cake has this different kind of sweetness which I like. It’s a light kind of sweetness and the sour cream works hand and hand with each other because that cream gave it the extra kick/sweetness that it needs. It is very pleasant to eat and all my relatives absolutely loved it!
Anyways, I hoped you all enjoyed your 4th of July!
Until next time,
<3 FCG.
