Have you ever had a craving for Chinese food or noodles but didn’t feel like going downtown to Chinatown to get it?  I know I do and sometimes, I just don’t have the time or the patience to go over there.  Be advised that you must bring a fatter wallet than you normally do because Sammy’s is not only not located in Chinatown, but they also do not charge Chinatown prices.  Think about that!  Located in the West Village, Sammy’s is the sure quick solution for your my Chinese craving!

The menu is so long that there’s no way you won’t be drooling for their food.  I have the Menupages link posted above, so take a look.

Unlike most Chinese restaurants, this restaurant will not rush you at all.  I always hate it when the moment I take off my jacket and get seated in my chair, the waitress/waiter comes by and ask for my order.  That absolutely grinds my gears because they should be more mindful to their customers.   Not all of them are like that, just a lot of the ones that I go to are like that.   My friend and I who have not seen each other in years, took our sweet time deciding what to choose.  It’s hard when you have a near endless menu like they have which I like.  I learned something that night, once you make up your mind on your dishes, stick with it.   The more I looked at the menu, the more I was going to change my order.   It happens.

Thai Ice Tea

Thai Ice Tea - The Refresher - $3.50

Tastes like what a thai ice tea should be; sweet and milky.  That hit the spot.

Chicken Curry Puff

Curry Chicken Pie - $2.25

The skin is nice, crispy, and flaky just the way I love it.   The sweet curry goes along well with the chicken and to combine that with the amazing skin just left my mouth watering for more.   When you order it, they’ll just give you one so be mindful of that if you’re interested in ordering.

Sa Cha Beef over Noodles

Noodle on Sizzling Platter - Sa Cha Beef over Noodles - $8.95

I have to admit, I never had these kind of noodles, but it worked well with the beef!  The beef is so succulent and moist from the Sa Cha sauce.  Sa Cha sauce is a Chinese BBQ sauce that is good for stir frying protein or good to use as a soup base for hot pot, that contains garlic, shallots, chillis and soy bean oil.  Considering this, the beef can get salty and spicy, which is why you will need the noodles that looks like udon noodles.   I would prefer it if the chef went a little easy on the vegetables, but nonetheless this is a very dish!

Cake w/Shrimp – $8.50″]New Year's Cake w/Shrimp - $8.50My friend ordered this incredibly delicious rice cake dish that I miss so much.  I can’t think of any where outside of Chinatown that serves Chinese Rice Cake.  I’m sure they exist, I just haven’t discovered it.  Rice cake will always have a special place in my heart because it is my comfort food when I go to a Shanghai restaurant.  Rice cake is essential glutinous rice flour that is molded into pieces which you see above.  It’s soft and chewy and has absorbed all the delicious flavors of the dish! Words just can’t describe how incredible this dish is.  I highly recommend it.

The portion are so big that you cannot eat it alone.  My friend and I made the mistake of ordering two different entrees and not knowing that serve large portions and ended up just eating barely half of the dish.  We took the rest home.  For the price we paid, the food is definitely worth it and the price is not bad at all.  For two people including drinks, tip and tax, the bill came out to be about $33 which isn’t bad.

I would definitely come back here if I have the chance!  The restaurant is busy like Chinatown, but they’re much more patience and relaxed over there.

I will leave you with the results from the health inspection report of this establishment!

Is this the relocation of Sammy’s on West 4th & 6th Ave or their other location? I remember they had another location further north but never went to that one.

They make pretty good Chinese/Asian food here. Somewhat Americanized but still had lots of authentic flavor. And the price was fair and the portion was huge for Manhattan.

I don’t know why the West 4th location closed. They had a very good business. Probably the rent went up.
