Spot Dessert Bar
I must have passed by this sign way too many times and had no idea that it is a dessert bar. Located on the bristling street of St. Mark’s Place where many new and upcoming restaurants fight for survival, Spot seems to be hidden away. Apparently, Spot is plenty known within the local community through word of mouth and I will explain later. I personally don’t like it that they’re located in the basement, right beneath Pho restaurant, but on the positive note, the restaurant doesn’t get overcrowded like at a chain restaurant like Applebees or TGI Fridays.
Spot Dessert Bar NYC
Before Spot made their debut at this location, their predecessor used to be an antique-ish shop with many useless and expensive items. My friend Sally over at the Tasty Confection decided to take me to a dessert bar since she has been there, and I was shocked to know that that antique-goods shop has went under and became this gourmet dessert bar. That’s good news for me because at least I can spend my money for something in there without breaking my bank account. Yes I totally thought about that.

Spot Dessert Bar Toppings
Don’t expect the Spot Dessert Bar to be big because it’s actually very “cozy” and intimate. Next to the entrance/exit are big tables cafeteria style for groups, and then probably 3 or 4 small tables for people to sit in.
Fresh Flowers at Spot Dessert Bar
When Sally and I walked into Spot, I somehow just loved the ambiance despite the coziness. The dessert bar was dimly lit but not to the point where it’s borderline pitch darkness. The dark hardwood floors, the toppings bar, modern looking tables and chairs created this atmosphere that I liked. My sixth sense tells me that the feng shiu is good here.
Sally and I sat on a “cozy” little table for two and was greeted by fresh flowers and candle. I love it! All part of the experience.
Spice Hot Chocolate with Crispy Chocolate Pearls
This hot chocolate is to die for! Everything about the formation of this hot chocolate is so harmonious that you can just taste nothing but happiness in your mouth. The hot chocolate is smooth and creamy with hints of cinnamon and brown sugar, and the chocolate pearls gives it that crispy texture that makes this drink unique. Delicious. What else can I say? I just don’t recommend you to have it with your dessert because it will be too much.
Passionfruit Flavored Drink
My dear Sally offered me first dips her her drink. Forgive me since I do not remember the name of the drink and it is not on their online menu because it often changes like the weather. But I remember that it tasted like passionfruit flavored lemonade powered by seltzer water for that carbon-y taste. It’s not bad. It looks like champagne and the beautiful part is that it’s not!
Jackfruit Cake w/condense milk ice cream covered with basil seeds and a side of jackfruit w/toasted coconut flakes
This is my first like having jack fruit and the fruit itself tastes like a sugar-free version of the mango, in my personal opinion. Somehow I find that quite charming and fun to eat so I liked it. The jackfruit cake is incredibly moist, soft, and not overbearingly sweet. It goes especially well with the condense milk ice cream which I love so much. Another great dish.

Ovaltine cake w/homemade rice krispies and sprinkled with chocolate pearls
Sally and I agreed that this Ovaltine cake by far is the best we have had this nice. The feeling that you get when you have this is like eating a fresh warm chocolate souffle. It just melts in your mouth and it is not too sweet at all. Very delicious. Highly recommended if available.
Spice brownie, chinese walnut cookie, vanilla almond coconut cupcake and some coconut bar w/almond flakes
To be quite honest I did not like any of these desserts. The Chinese walnut cookie, personally, I don’t like it too incredibly crispy and dry so it didn’t do it for me. The brownie, which the chocolate came from some special rain forest spot in South America with the highest quality of cocoa tasted spicy and sort of bitter. Not to mention that it’s dry, just the whole brownie did do it for me and Sally. I can’t even remember the name of the bar, let alone the taste of this bar. It wasn’t memorable at all. And lastly the cupcake was nothing special. I’m not a cupcake kind of girl which is why maybe I didn’t enjoy it.
Overall it was a great experience at Spot. This meal cost $32 and not including tip. It is pricey because the recipe is from a reputed chef, Pichet Ong, and everything is gourmet. I cannot come here everyday, but it’s definitely worth coming to at least once.
Until again,
