Student Biryani Food Cart, Jackson Heights, NY

When I was informed by one of my readers, Sasha, that the Student Biryani cart was no longer there, I was devastated.   Please see my previous post by clicking on this link: Infamous Taste of Pakistan – Student Biryani Food Cart. My friend and I went over there to confirm if that was the case and it was.  Honest to god in my humble opinion, this man whips one of of the best chicken biryani I have ever tasted.   The flavors from that biryani is so diverse and intense (from saltiness to sweetness and spiciness) that makes it hard to resist.  Not all biryani’s are created equal and you will definitely know when you have tried this.  To know that it was my last time tasting something so unique and flavorful was of great sadness to me.   But I can say with full confidence that the Student Biryani Food Cart is back with a fresh new look and attracting more customers than ever.

The question my friend and I always wanted to be answered was, where in the world did the food cart disappeared to for all those months??  That biryani chief was going to be drilled by both of us like a cop interrogating an unsuspecting suspect.

Now apparently, the student biryani food cart never disappeared.  According to the owner, because he was flying solo back then, he could only work the day shift which was why no one saw him at night.  Since then, he has hired an additional man to work the late night shift while he goes off and retire at home.   Luckily when my friend and I arrived there, we caught him just as he was going to take off from his shift.   He remembers my friend and I and was happy to serve us.

The updated menu is as follows:

  • Chicken and Rice
  • Lamb and Rice
  • Combination
  • Fish Over Rice
  • Chicken Biryani
  • Beef Biryani
  • Goat Biryani
  • Chicken or Lamb Gyro
  • Bun Kabab
  • Chapli Kabab
  • Shish Kabab
  • Hot Dog
  • Salad and Fish
  • Kashmiri Chai (Tea)

In my experience, the great thing about going to a Pakistani vendor or restaurant is that you can tell them whatever you want that might not be on a menu and they will do it.  For example, there was this Indian girl who wanted biryani but didn’t want any meat in it.  Done!  And no questions ask.   Heck, if I went to a Chinese restaurant and want to order black-pepper jumbo shrimp over stir fried lo mein, they would never accommodate that.   And true story, the restaurant didn’t accommodate me because supposedly the pepper jumbo shrimp is an entree.  Why that is a problem is beyond me, but it makes me appreciate Pakistani customer service that  much more.

My friend wanted to try the Chapli Kabab and told me how delicious it is.  Chapli Kabab is basically a Pakistani take on the hamburger, but with a powerful kick.  I am always enthusiastic about new takes on food and did not hesitate to try!

It may look very ordinary, but the beef was so tender and juicy because it wasn’t charbroiled like a regular burger.   The iceburg lettuce balances the spiciness from the beef patty and the white sauce adds additional moisture to your eating experience.  This balance and harmony of flavors was what gave me the satisfaction from this meal.  Granted that the beef patty could be more saltier, it was still a very good burger!

Part of making an ethnic food cart so successful is that it doesn’t taste so ethnic that it throws off your taste palette.   The biryani and the chapli kabab was as normal as eating any rice dish or having a burger.  I enjoyed the food that I ate there and would recommend you to do the same.   I will definitely nominate this card for the 2011 Vendy Food Awards and I hope that you will agree!  I am always up for suggestions to try out different food carts and restaurants!  Please feel free to leave me a suggestion and I will try to blog about my experience!

Until next time,

<3 FCG

The Chapli Kabab looks great but tell him he needs to move his cart to Manhattan. That way, I can try some of his food!
