Five Hungry Guys hitting up Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries: Queens
Five Guys Famouse Burgers and Fries

Having never heard of Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries until recently (I know, where have I been?! Stuck in the office too long!) and having only eaten In N Out Burger this past summer when I was in California (absolutely delicious by the way), I was all too happy to raid this burger joint. My Australian friend, Gary, wanted to hit a Greasy, fatty, delicious Burger spot before we hit the bar and him leaving the States for his home down under. I was recommended this place.

Lesson of the day! As my friend points out, when a restaurant or store lists a few countries for the cuisine type, the country that is listed first is usually the primary group. So in this case, even though the restaurant lists 3 countries, it is owned by a Pakistani and the cuisine type is Pakistani. The reason why the other countries are listed is to attract customers of those nationalities. Yes, what an interesting tidbit!
The world of Jackson Heights is bristling with fast-paced people primarily from South Asia of all hours of the night. See in Chinatown, it’s gets dead around 11pm, but here supermarkets are shops are opened 24hrs! Restaurants are opened late night, but not all of them are. I have to admit, yes there are people walking around late night, but they are mostly men. I have yet to see any women besides my friend and I, so it made us feel a little uncomfortable. Now, there are halal carts on almost every block so you can be sure that you’ll never go hungry. After shopping for Indian spices and ingredients at the infamous Patel Brothers supermarket, my friend and I decided to look for a restaurant to settle down to eat. So we drove to Woodside, which isn’t too far away, to a restaurant that I have yet to explore.

Char Sui Bau (Steamed & Baked Roast Pork Buns) Comparison
So after reading that article from David Carr about Char Sui Baus, aka Roast Pork Buns, it just made me want to go get some. Thats just what I did this weekend. Since I live near the Flushing, Queens area, there’s a slew of bakeries to choose from. There’s the bigger names in bakeries like Tai Pan and then there are just very local/family owned ones. I prefer the local ones of course rather than the chains. Their prices are usually cheaper (of course the ones in Chinatown in Manhattan are still cheaper compared to Queens) and some times their food is just higher quality. I passed by this Bakery named Maxin Bakery and I’ve been meaning to stop in there to try it out. Its not a very big place with only 3 tables or so but the food looks great.
Now the real reason why I stopped in there is because of my Char Sui Bau craving. So I went and bought a bunch because one is just not enough for me. There’s two types of these Pork Buns, the Steamed ones and the Baked ones. Its so difficult to choose until you taste the difference and really its more of a matter of personal taste than anything. Some prefer steamed and some just prefer baked.

Kosher Coca Cola!
Now I should have posted this earlier but I was too busy shopping for Coke with Real Sugar. As this was Passover recently, you can purchase Coke at your local Supermarket that is Kosher, that means it uses Real Sugar instead of High Fructose Corn Syrup. You can probably still find some. The Coke Bottles will have a little K symbol on the side label and a Yellow Cap. If you find cans, it should also have a symbol of a K. Coke is the only one of the Major labels that does this. Of course in other countries (like Canada), they sometimes use Natural Sugar.
Debasaki Japanese Style Chicken, Flushing, NY – Part 2
My apologies for the delayed post! I will continue from part 1 and show you some of the dishes that I have tried at Debasaki.
First thing you must keep in mind when you’re seated is there is a red button, shown below, that you must press in order to call the waitress. If you don’t do that, you’ll end up sitting forever until you wonder why no one is showing up. I think that is unique because sometimes I don’t want to be rushed and want to call the waitress when I’m ready. Already this is a good sign of a good restaurant experience!

When you’re seated, the waitress will immediately bring you their complimentary Coleslaw which has honey mustard and mayo for the dressing.

Kimchi Fried Rice w/egg
This kimchi fried rice has spam in it! Yes spam and I was definitely excited! I know it might sound disgusting, but it actually went very well with this spicy dish! Sometimes you need that soft texture to balance out the hard texture of the fried rice. The egg made the dish even better, so I would highly recommend to try this!
