Bibimbap (Korean Dish)
Have you ever had Bibimbap before? If you ever had Korean food, you must have tried Bibimbap. I introduced this to a friend of mine, her first time eating at a Korean restaurant. She ended up loving the dish.
For those that never had Bibimbap, it is a Korean Mixed Dish consisting of a hot stone bowl filled with white rice, mixed sauteed vegetables, and Gochujang (Chili Pepper Paste). Sometimes, the dish is topped off with an Egg and a choice of Beef, Pork, Chicken or even Shrimp. Vegetables can be a variety depending on where you go to eat but almost always julienned. It can include mushrooms, daikon (Asian Radish), bean sprouts, lettuce and even tofu. All the vegetables on top with the egg creates a gorgeous palette of colors and of course appetizing. You won’t be able to resist once you see and smell it.
If you never had Bibimbap before, try it at your nearest Korean Restaurant. It is such a staple food that its almost impossible to screw this up! Mix thoroughly before eating the dish!

*7/19/09 Update: I returned here for the second time and I love the haleem and naan! It’s so savory and enjoyable to eat especially when the naan is fresh out of the oven! I highly recommend you guys to try!
Lesson of the day! As my friend points out, when a restaurant or store lists a few countries for the cuisine type, the country that is listed first is usually the primary group. So in this case, even though the restaurant lists 3 countries, it is owned by a Pakistani and the cuisine type is Pakistani. The reason why the other countries are listed is to attract customers of those nationalities. Yes, what an interesting tidbit!
The world of Jackson Heights is bristling with fast-paced people primarily from South Asia of all hours of the night. See in Chinatown, it’s gets dead around 11pm, but here supermarkets are shops are opened 24hrs! Restaurants are opened late night, but not all of them are. I have to admit, yes there are people walking around late night, but they are mostly men. I have yet to see any women besides my friend and I, so it made us feel a little uncomfortable. Now, there are halal carts on almost every block so you can be sure that you’ll never go hungry. After shopping for Indian spices and ingredients at the infamous Patel Brothers supermarket, my friend and I decided to look for a restaurant to settle down to eat. So we drove to Woodside, which isn’t too far away, to a restaurant that I have yet to explore.

Whole Chicken in a Can – Sweet Sue Canned Whole Chicken!
If you thought the Duck-in-a-Can I had from Au Pied de Cochon was weird, you’ll have to check this one out from Tracy at ihatemymessageboard.com. It’s amazing what you can fit into a can these days. I wonder whats next, maybe an Ostrich? I should start a new section specifically for Poultry-in-a-Can.
If you think about it, it looks absolutely disgusting but its cooked meat in a can like any soups, chilis or hundreds of other meat products. But somehow it just makes me queasy looking at it and it doesn’t look much better after its been cooked (notice the feathers still on the chicken)

Executive Chef: Kai-Wa Yau
Hours of Operation:
Sunday – Thursday, 5:30pm – 10:00pm
Friday & Saturday, 5:30pm – 10:30pm
This restaurant located within the MGM Grand (inside where all restaurants are) is a Four Diamond Restaurant. Top notch in terms of decor, service, food as well as prices. We just had to try this Chinese restaurant to gauge whether it really is top notch or not. The cuisine is mainly Cantonese with an influence from Shanghai and a hint of Western flavor in certain dishes. Notice the hours of Operations. All the Four Diamond awarded restaurants are open for dinner only. Reservations are suggested but not necessary. When we went, it was not very packed.

This halal cart is famous for its chicken and rice platter. As you may see many other vendors like this one, the taste and quality of the food is completely different. Every day there is a long line queued with many hungry New Yorkers as well as tourists just to get a taste of this delicious platter. The line moves very quickly and the wait is definitely well worth the wait.
